Key Guitar Chords

A key denotes the root of a scale that a group of given chords or notes fall into. For example, if a song begins on a G chord, and then transitions to C and D chords, before returning again to G, this song would be in the key of G. For soloing purposes, this means a G major scale could be used to play or sing over the song.. The keys listed are C, G, D, A and E. These are the most common keys for guitar players, and 80 percent of songs are in these five keys. Each of them offer context and contain a small group of chords that relate to each other and work great in songs. For the most part, these keys will allow you to play simple songs without having to deal with.

Yet, in standard guitar tuning, some keys are easier to play than others. For example, in the key of C, you can play the root chord ( C major) in open position. However, in Cm, you either need to use a barre chord or place a capo on the 3rd fret and transpose your chord voicings to the key of Am. The most common major guitar keys are G, C, A.. By following the same pattern on each note in the scale, we're able to easily figure out all seven main chords that fit in the key. For example, the fourth chord in the key of C uses the notes: F A C, which gives us the chord F Major. Here are all the chords highlighted above: C E G: C Major. D F A : D minor.
